Questions & Answers

Stannington Library is managed by STAND - Stannington and District Library Group.

STAND was formed in 2013 after Sheffield City Council announced its decision to close sixteen libraries (including Stannington) unless volunteers took them on.  STAND was registered as a charity in 2014 and is funded by grants, donations and fund-raising activities.  The library is run by a team of dedicated volunteers.

Stannington & District Library Group manages Stannington Library in a professional manner, and our aim is to provide a safe, friendly, welcoming environment for all. If you have questions about the library, you may find the answers here.

Books that are in near-mint condition and are likely to be most popular with readers will be included in The Stannington Yellow Sticker Collection and made available for library users to borrow.

We sell good quality second-hand adult fiction books, children's books, DVDs and jigsaw puzzles all year round. We sometimes create a temporary Bargain Corner to sell other saleable bric-a-brac type items inside the library - usually at Christmas or Easter. Look out for our occasional Pop-up Book Stalls outside the shops in the village, as well as at other local events.

Any excess donations are currently sold to online companies, where possible, or passed on to other local charities.

The only changes that have been made in Stannington Library have been additions.

As well as books owned by Sheffield Libraries, Stannington Library has its own collection of Yellow Sticker books. Currently there are around 8,500 Yellow Sticker books available for loan and we are adding new books every month.

We also decided to invest in a new suite of computers for use by our library users for free. There are three available to book. All have Microsoft Office programs as well as internet access and some programs suitable for children.

There's a great selection of second-hand adult and children's books for sale in our foyer, as well as a good selection of adult and children's DVDs. All funds raised go towards the upkeep of the library.

From 5th June 2023, we have increased our opening times to 22 hours per week.

Stannington Library will only open its doors to the public if at least two volunteers are available to oversee the session. In this we are no different from any other library, volunteer or local authority-run.

To date, we have only failed to open for an advertised session on one occasion and that was only because there was a power failure affecting our part of Stannington.

Visit our Volunteers page for more information about how to become a volunteer.

Your current Sheffield Libraries card allows you access to all the services available in Stannington Library. Stannington Library has books owned by Sheffield Libraries but it also has its own Yellow Sticker Collection of books that is constantly being updated - see our Latest Additions page. To be able to borrow our Yellow Sticker books you need to sign an agreement to allow us to access the details you provided to Sheffield Libraries.

NB: Yellow Sticker books can only be returned to Stannington Library whereas Sheffield Libraries books can be returned to any Sheffield Library.

Volunteers are vital to Stannington Library and we are constantly looking to increase our numbers.

Volunteering at Stannington Library is a rewarding and very social experience. If you have skills you think we could use, please download our Volunteer Application Form which can be completed and delivered to the library. Alternatively send us an email on [email protected] or phone and leave a message on 0114 234 8732. Our Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to arrange a meeting.

As well as the volunteer library assistants everyone sees working on the front desk, we need fund-raisers, communicators, people who can help take care of the building inside and out, IT helpers, and a host of other roles.

See our Volunteers page for the latest information.

Your Sheffield Libraries card entitles you to the same services it always has. This includes requesting material from any other library in Sheffield for collection at Stannington Library.

You can call into Stannington Library and ask one of our Volunteers to search for you or you can log in to the Sheffield Libraries online catalogue directly, using your library card number and pin number.
