Autumn 2024 Half-term Activities at Stannington Library

We have two very different types of activity for our younger members during the Autumn half-term.

One that will interest anyone who likes football and wishes to find out more about the history of football in Sheffield - known as the birthplace of football. This is on Tuesday 29 October - 1pm to 3pm.

Then two shorter activities for children who like to use their imagination, on Tuesday 29 October 10.30am to 11.30am and Thursday 31 October 1.30pm to 2.30pm. CHOL Theatre are writing a book to celebrate ten years of Stannington Library being run by volunteers. Stannington's very own children's story book will be written by local children and their families. See below for more information:

What to expect: Local author Stephen T Wood is the co-author of this book and he will explain more about what the book contains and why it has been written. There will also be some fun activities and refreshments.

Win a copy of the book: We are also holding a raffle for a copy of the book. On the day, two raffle tickets will be given to children who sign up for the activity before the event (the list is at the front desk of the library) and one raffle ticket will be given to children who turn up on the day.

Copies of the book are available for sale in the library. It costs £5 and all monies go to the registered charity 'Sheffield Home of Football'. Monies raised goes towards paying for blue plaques to commemorate places connected with football history in Sheffield.

To celebrate ten years of Stannington Library being a volunteer-run library we have teamed up with Chol Theatre to create our very own children's story book, written by local children and their families.

But we need YOUR help!

What to expect: CHOL Theatre are running two hour-long sessions - one on Tuesday and the other on Thursday. In the sessions children will take part in story making workshops to think up ideas, characters and places that will feature in the story book. These fun interactive sessions will get creative juices flowing and help us to gather lots of ideas for our storybook. We will use a variety of creative activities from drama games to drawing to co-create our Stannington Story. Children can come to both workshops or just one depending on your availability. If you know you can attend, please add your name to the sign-up sheet at the front desk in the library - but it is also fine to turn up on the day.

Not able to attend? Pick up a worksheet from the front desk of the library. Please return any completed worksheets by Friday 7 November - and remember to add name, age and contact details. You can download a copy of the worksheet by clicking here.

We hope your ideas are used in this exciting project - and we look forward to seeing the finished book!

STAND was formed in 2013 after Sheffield City Council announced its decision to close sixteen libraries (including Stannington) unless volunteers took them on. STAND was registered as a charity in 2014 and is funded by grants, donations and fund-raising activities. The library is run by a team of dedicated volunteers.
